Tour de Switch

Switch CampusThe Las Vegas Unidev office is a half a mile from the amazing Switch. Switch is the world’s largest and most powerful data center and technology ecosystem.  A data center is used to store computer systems whether it’s for back-up or communication tools.

Last week Catherine Harris, Unidev’s VP of Mobile and Web Development toured the Switch facility with me.  The Switch facility is no ordinary data center. Since 2006 Switch and Rob Roy have over 125 claims at the patent office. This Includes 42 awarded and 83 additional designs pending release in 2012.  The data center has 2,200,000 square feet of space and 24/7/365 on site security, safety, operations, and critical infrastructure personnel.

Switch is not only the largest data center, but they have the most powerful technology ecosystem called CORE.  CORE stands for Combined Ordering Retail Ecosystem.   Check out all the companies involved with CORE by clicking on this link http://www.switchnap.com/pages/all-things-switch/connectivity_2.php.   According to their website, no single enterprise in the world has the buying power of the combined groups that exist today in the SuperNAP client ecosystem.  This is also one of the benefits of using Switch for your business.  They have saved business thousands and thousands of dollars by offering this service to their customers.

The Power of VegasTech and its Hashtag

Unidev's Steve Thomas at LaunchUpThe VegasTech hashtag is a powerful communication tool that keeps the community thriving and growing every minute of the day thanks to Twitter.  The hashtag brings people, companies and event happenings all to one place.  Las Vegas is one of the most entrepreneurial cities within the United States.  According to CNN, they listed Nevada as the 7th most entrepreneurial state because of the number of technology firms that recently opened up and the friendly business tax climate.

Unidev is new to this community.  As a new member, Unidev is trying find its place and where the cool kids are hanging out. The VegasTech hashtag made it easy for Unidev to find out where it needs to be and how to locate techies and entrepreneurs in the VegasTech community.

On the contrary, the VegasTech hashtag also helped launch Unidev as a key player.  The community sees Unidev as an advocate in hosting events and participating in events. These event opportunities create awareness in local companies and techies, who then become more inclined to support Unidev in the future.

One example of event participation is when Unidev’s VP of Business Development, Steve Thomas, acquired the opportunity to speak last week at LaunchUp#5.  LaunchUp is a local organization that assists new start-ups in introducing themselves, and teaches them how the VegasTech Community can help in building a name. Another speaker was part of a newly funded company by VegasTech, called Ticketcake.  To purchase the tickets for the event everyone used their website www.ticketcake.com.  While Unidev was representing itself at the event, it also promoted the Ticketcake website.  Through the power of Twitter and the VegasTech hash tag, Unidev and Ticketcake gladly started including each other on their tweets to advertise the event.

The LauchUp event was a great success. The VegasTech hashtag created collaboration between Unidev and Ticketcake, who will now work on a project together.  Both companies are excited about the new partnership and look forward to working on many future projects together.

Why Hospitality is One of the Biggest Hi-Tech Industries

Technology is taking over in the hospitality industry. Resorts and hotels provide their guests with interactive resources literally at the tip of Hospitalitytheir fingers. Instead of guests making multiple calls to the front desk to find their way around a resort, they now use portable devices to make their stay even more enjoyable.

Revel, a resort in Atlantic City, recently implemented the use of innovative tablets to engage their visitors. Revel has implemented an interactive guest-service solution designed by a collaborative team of technology partners, Suitelinq and Unidev. The Cisco-created hardware and the integrated software package device allows guests to easily access extensive amounts of information. Visitors can check the weather, order room service, view promotions, track flights and more. The tablet also acts as the room phone and alarm clock. You can attach the tablet to the phone and make a call or remove it from the phone dock and call through a speaker phone.

Along with the convenience, interactive menus such as the one used at Revel allow for metrics of data. If the hotels or resorts would like to track the times and frequency people are ordering food or scheduling a massage, they can do so quickly and efficiently using a digital platform. Another example of this advancement is mobile apps. Mobile apps stored on the tablet allow guests to access additional information regarding the hotel properties.

Revel is not the only hospitality venue integrating technology changes. The Hilton chain increased its customer satisfaction by implementing Hilton Design Studio. The Hilton Design Studio guides online users through the hotel and gives them the opportunity to ‘design a guest room’. The Hilton will also be adding interactive products for the valet and a connectivity station. Another example of technology arriving in hospitality is Hyatt Hotels enhancing its rooms with interactive televisions. Through the TV, guests can not only decide on entertainment choices, but ordering room service, searching local information and file downloads will also be available.

Technology is growing rapidly in hotels and other resorts because of the competition. With more of the popular hospitality establishments growing digitally, they create a pressure in the market for other providers to keep up. This generates a need for companies like Suitelinq and Unidev to design unique digital solutions.

With new technology, hotels can dramatically improve and innovate upon the “guest experience”. Employees can better manage their time using a digital solution rather than taking phone calls. Technology implementation in the hospitality industry is continuing to grow and is bringing new solutions to workers and travelers everywhere.
