Have you chatted with AI yet?

Have you heard about ChatGPT?
“ChatGPT is a natural language processing (NLP) model developed by OpenAI. It is a variant of the GPT-3 model, which is one of the largest and most powerful language models currently available. ChatGPT is specifically designed to handle conversational tasks, such as responding to text-based messages in a chat or messaging app. It uses its training on vast amounts of conversational data to generate responses that are coherent, relevant, and human-like. ChatGPT is constantly learning and improving, but it does not have the ability to browse the internet or access external information outside of what it has been trained on.”
One of our marketing team members recently had an interesting conversation with her teenage son, which prompted conversations around the office…
After dinner we were having a conversation about the new AI tool called ChatGPT, with varying degrees of familiarity. One of us had read an article about this new technology, one of us had seen a few interesting tweets about it and our son had learned about it on TikTok. After our conversation, our son wanted to show us the new AI in action.
He was already plugging in prompts and having it compose content. Before we knew it, he had typed his most recent essay writing prompt for his 9th grade Pre-AP English class and in just a moment a fully written essay appeared on Of Mice and Men. He updated his prompt and asked it to write a long essay and up popped a much longer essay, twice the length of the first. Again, he tweaked the question and asked for the essay to include quotations and there it was, his full assignment complete within moments. (Disclaimer, this assignment was due several weeks ago so no cheating here.)
As parents we just looked at each other with jaws dropped and the questions started flowing. Is this the end of students writing essays outside of the classroom? Kids all over the nation, and soon the world, will be tempted to cheat on papers. In the coming years will there be a reason for any person to write content for anything? If AI tools can compose such well written material what will be left for people to write other than works of non-fiction?
ChatGPT was just released last week and already everyone in our family has heard of it from unique sources, and it has surpassed 1 million users. In fact, the introductory paragraph above was written by the Assistant tool.
To use the ChatGPT Assistant tool you must create a free account using your email address and a password. Then type a writing prompt in the text box at the bottom of the screen and hit Enter.
To get more precise information, update your prompt.
See the following screenshot for an example:
As I’m typing this post, my son came down and asked to show me the coolest thing ChatGPT does. He typed the prompt “write a movie script” and there it was, a 12-paragraph script. Looking more closely, it’s not actually a script with dialogue, but it did create a storyline with Opening and Closing Scenes. Oh, the possibilities!
2023 is going to be weird. Will there be a reason for informational websites anymore? Will Google still be a valuable tool? Before long I might not need to ask Google for stats about sports players, instead I can use a similar AI tool and it will compile all the information I need in one place. Soon we might be living with the Jetsons.
