Interview Practice at Gateway STEM

Unidev Presentation Gateway STEMWednesday May 8th was Unidev’s last day of the school year to work with junior and senior students at the St. Louis public school, Gateway STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math). Gateway allows its students to concentrate in particular areas of study, giving them the opportunity to decide their career interests early on. Along with these concentrations, seniors are required to complete internships. Unidev and its local web design and web marketing division, The Net Impact, partnered with Gateway Stem in 2012 to give perspective on the work force. They specifically presented to the marketing and business students, and today they worked with the students performing mock interviews.

The day started off with students dispersing amongst practice interviewers. Although individual interviews lasted around 15 minutes, the questions asked taught the students to think on their feet and develop answers to situational questions, requiring examples from past experiences. This became difficult as many students have not yet held jobs and had to relate to situations that may have occurred on their sports teams and volunteer activities.

Ending with critiques, the students overall did a great job. For most, this was their first interview experience and now they are able to understand the importance of detail, confidence and relatability when it comes to applying and interviewing for a job they desire. After they wiped the sweat off of their foreheads, they seemed to agree the experience was a positive one and will help them in their future endeavors.

Unidev’s Favorite Fitness Apps of 2013

On January 1, 2013, I grabbed a notepad and (like most) began scribbling down goals for the New Year. Eat healthy, workout more, drink more water.  My first two weeks were great. I hit the gym and cooked healthy meals.  By week three, I began feeling burned out. Not wanting to quit, I turned to my trusty iPhone for some much needed motivation. There were so many fitness apps, that I didn’t know what to pick.  I asked around the office and researched a few of the Unidev Favorites!

I’m Dreaming of a Unidev Christmas

Friday, December 14th, Unidev hosted its annual Christmas party for employees. As the week went by, many holiday activities took place to spread cheer around the office. Secret Santas delivered presents, desks were decorated, ugly sweaters were worn, cookies were exchanged and items were gathered for charity.

Participants in Secret Santa worked hard this year to exchange creative gifts. Small gifts showed up on desks throughout the week, and Friday the biggest gifts were exchanged along with the reveal of Santas.

The desk decorating contest got a slow start, but eventually decorations flooded in! Some decorated individually while others teamed up and put in a full display. Our project managers took home the gold. Extra points for bringing Santa to the office!Santa at Unidev

After a huge meal Friday afternoon, many employees took part in the Pictionary and Bingo games in the conference rooms.Pictionary at Unidev

Thanks to all the employees for a great Christmas celebration and for donating to Our Little Haven this year! Happy Holidays to our readers!

Energy of Unidev Sponsored by: Caffeine

coffeeThe work day is already long and if projects reach deadlines or overtime is needed, they can become even longer. Many professionals can’t go a day without making their way through the Starbucks drive-thru or to the soda machine on the first floor. With caffeine having such an influence on energy required to get through the day, we decided to conduct a survey at Unidev to find out how much caffeine our company takes-in alone.

The caffeine survey sent out allowed us to analyze how much caffeine workers drink and how often they drink it. Employees at Unidev, including programmers, designers, marketers and managers, were given choices of coffee, soda, tea, energy drinks and none for caffeine preferences. The other question surveyed was the frequency they consume caffeine, with choices of daily, weekly, monthly and never. Out of 57 employees, 50 responses came in and the jury delivered its verdict.

Soda is the most popular drink of choice amongst the Unidev staff with coffee coming in as a close second. Most of our employees drink caffeine on a daily basis, while only 6 never drink caffeine. When broken down by department, soda still won over the crowd. Each department drinks soda the most, and consumes caffeine daily. Caffeine studies do support the effectiveness of caffeine in providing alertness, which in turn leads to efficiency.

Often times, people look for healthier alternatives to caffeinated drinks to keep them lively without the sugar and end-of-day crash. Making sure you get a substantial healthy breakfast which will give your body energy and the calories needed to get the day started is the first step.  Grab a handful of nuts which help convert sugar to energy, or eat fruits, veggies and whole grains. These provide fiber and fiber assists in keeping energy at a steady level. If you have a sweet tooth, dark chocolate is the way to go.

Next study: do tech companies drink more or less caffeine in comparison to other industries. What are your thoughts?

2012 Unidev Chili Cook-off

This past Monday, November 12, 2012, Unidev held its annual chili cook-off amongst employees. There was a variety of chilies including a couple choices for the vegetarians and vegans in the office. Seven chefs concocted their best tasting creations along with some cornbread, and everyone in the office casted their ballots.

Last year, Dhanya was the champion and she was knocked out of first place this year by Jon. Jon had an abundance of great-tasting ingredients in his chili. It was just spicy enough for everyone to enjoy it, even those that can’t take the heat. Second place and also voted the most unique tasting chili, was Liz. Third place was Jared, and Dhanya took home the award for Best Afterburn this year.  Here are some pics to lick your lips to:
